Daily Homework

I believe homework is an important element of fourth grade. Not only does help review and solidify content and skills covered in class, but homework also teaches students responsibility. Fourth grade students will have a short review assignment every night during the week and one assignment over the weekend. These assignments are review and should not take a great deal of time. Students are always welcome to ask questions about their homework first thing in the morning, but I would like to see that they have tried at home.

Students are also expected to be reading at home every night. I encourage students to read a wide variety of text, both fiction and nonfiction. I also challenge you as parents to read with your child. Developing readers need to hear examples of fluent readers and time to practice reading fluently. Check in often with your child about what he or she is reading independently. Asking questions about characters, events, and conflict are great ways to check comprehension for fiction reading. Encourage your child to share new facts that they have learned or something he or she noticed about the organization of text in nonfiction reading. Written or oral summaries are wonderful for both types of text.

Every student at West Grand has access to hundreds of comprehension quizzes through Accelerated Reader. Throughout the year, students will be asked to take AR quizzes for books they have read at home. These tests can be taken at school, home, library- anywhere with Internet access.
